Pest control spraying around the outside of a home

Bihar's hot summers, long monsoon and floods bring different pests at different times of year. Use this seasonal guide to plan treatments before problems start.

Bihar's climate shapes its pest problems. Very hot summers, a long and heavy monsoon, floods in the north and humid post-monsoon months mean that different pests peak at different times of the year. Planning treatment around these seasons is cheaper and more effective than reacting once an infestation is established.

Summer (March to early June)

Heat drives cockroaches deep into kitchen drains, cabinets and electrical appliances, and they breed quickly. Ants become very active, and lizards gather around lights where insects collect.

  • Best time for cockroach gel treatment and general pest control.
  • Restaurants and food shops should increase the frequency of service.
  • Plan pre-monsoon anti-termite treatment before the rains arrive.

Monsoon (mid-June to September)

This is the peak season for most pests across Bihar. In the Kosi and Mithila belts and other flood-prone districts, standing water and damp soil create ideal conditions.

  • Termites become active and swarm after the first rains. Watch for mud tubes and discarded wings.
  • Mosquitoes breed in every container and puddle. Start a weekly dry-day routine and mosquito control for societies and campuses.
  • Rats and snakes move to higher ground, including homes and godowns, when fields and drains flood.
  • Flies multiply around garbage and animal sheds.

Post-monsoon (October to November)

As water recedes, the risk shifts to disease. Dengue cases in many cities, including Patna, usually peak in this period. Humidity also keeps termites and cockroaches active.

  • Continue mosquito control until the weather turns cool.
  • Inspect for termite damage left by the monsoon, especially in store rooms and wooden fixtures.
  • A good time for festival-season disinfection of homes and shops.

Winter (December to February)

Rodents move indoors for warmth and food, especially after the harvest when fields are cleared. Wedding season and travel can bring bed bugs home in luggage.

  • Schedule rodent control for homes, godowns and grain stores.
  • Check mattresses and luggage after travel; treat bed bugs early with a two-round treatment.
  • A quieter season, which makes it a good time for annual contracts and inspections.

Regional differences within Bihar

  • North Bihar (Mithila, Kosi, Seemanchal): floods and very high humidity make termites and mosquitoes the main concern.
  • South Bihar (Magadh, Gaya): very hot, dry summers followed by a sudden monsoon cause a sharp seasonal surge in pests.
  • Ganga belt (Patna, Bhagalpur, Munger): riverside humidity and dense old neighbourhoods let cockroaches and rats spread between buildings.
  • South-west (Shahabad): paddy fields, canals and rice mills attract rodents and mosquitoes.
